Messenger usernames gave each person a unique handle that someone could use to find and message them without knowing their phone number or already being friends on Facebook. That created a more direct path for the growing number of people who wanted to connect on Messenger first, especially when common names made search unreliable.
The feature was designed as a companion to Messenger QR codes. A QR code worked when two people were standing together, while a username could be typed, shared, or opened as a link. Both pointed to the same Messenger profile, giving people consistent ways to connect in person or remotely.
The project resurfaced a dormant Facebook feature rather than creating a new identity system. Facebook usernames already existed behind profile URLs, but most people rarely saw or used them. Bringing usernames into Messenger made that existing identifier visible, editable, and useful again.
