Messenger QR codes give each person a scannable code tied to their profile. Two people standing together can connect without exchanging phone numbers or searching for a name that might match hundreds of strangers. One person opens their code, the other scans it, and the conversation starts.
The project focused on a behavior that was becoming increasingly common, particularly in developing markets but also in the US: people connecting on Messenger before becoming Facebook friends. A QR code gave them a direct path to the right account without exposing a phone number. It also paired with a Messenger username, so the same identity worked whether someone scanned a code or opened a link.
As design lead, I led the work from strategy through execution. Extensive in-field research and iterative prototyping shaped how people shared a code, scanned it, and started a conversation.
